The Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company Announces 2016 Recipient of the Life of Significance Award
HORSHAM, Pa. – June 5, 2016 – At the 2016 Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship in early June, The Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company (Penn Mutual) honored sophomore David Caputo from the University of Michigan with the Life of Significance Award. Caputo is the second recipient of the award, which is given annually to a collegiate rugby player participating in the CRC. Each recipient embodies Penn Mutual’s values of integrity, commitment and respect, and has made substantial contributions to society and their community.
Caputo was nominated by his head coach, Brandon Sparks. After learning that 61 percent of low-income families in the US have no books in their home for school-aged children, Caputo recognized the need to help. Since 2011, Caputo has collected and distributed 6,000 books to low-income families through a foundation he created called, Literacy Link. He began by setting up a donation box at his church and quickly moved on to collecting books at various organizations in and around his town of Topsfield, Massachusetts.
Now that Caputo is working towards a degree in Biopsychology, Cognition, and Neuroscience, as well as competing on the pitch at the University of Michigan, he has enlisted help from his mother and sister to share Literacy Link duties. Since establishing the foundation 5 years ago, Caputo is looking to expand the collection points outside of Massachusetts and hopes to one day replicate the successful donation efforts to the Detroit area.
“David is a natural leader on and off the pitch,” said Sparks. “We’re all so proud to have him on our team, and can’t wait to see what the future holds for him and his incredible foundation.”
“We’re honored to have David as part of the Penn Mutual rugby community, and present him with this year’s Life of Significance Award,” said Eileen McDonnell, chairman and CEO of Penn Mutual. “Not only does David demonstrate our values of integrity, commitment, and respect, but he also shares our passion for education and his contributions to his community are what make him more than worthy of receiving this award. On behalf of the company, we all wish him well as he continues to grow his foundation and continue to bring smiles to those around him.”
Upon winning the award, a $5,000 contribution will be made to Girl’s Inc. the charity of Caputo’s choice. Girl’s Inc. is one of Literacy Link’s largest recipients of books and relies heavily on donations. The University of Michigan’s rugby team will also receive $1,000 in Rhino rugby gear for their team’s equipment needs.
